Unit 8 - Assignment 1
The Recruitment and Selection Process
Daniel Vroy

Analysing the different recruitment methods used in
a selected business.

Introduction

In this document I will be analysing the different recruitment methods Asda uses by
talking about their advantages and disadvantages.

Job centres and agencies

One of the methods used by Asda is job centres and agencies. As Asda already has
a partnership with Job Centre Plus it will mean that having this partnership with the
Job Centre will help contribute a lot to the business as Asda will be able to ask the
Job Centre to help find any potential employees when they are looking to hire for
many different reasons.

One advantage of Asda for using job centres and agencies is that the business can
concentrate on improving their organisations rather than focus on who they are going
to employ to work as a cleaner in a factory. This shouldn't be a business priority and
should work in collaboration with organisations like the job centres and agencies who
do all this work for them.

Another advantage of Asda for using job centres and agencies is that the business
does not have to employ a recruitment team, meaning they will be saving time and
money on the people they would hire to find other potential employees. This is a
positive because they could spend the money, they would spend on a recruitment
team to reinvest back into the business for its growth.

A disadvantage however of Asda for using job centres and agencies is that the
business will have to pay these job centres and agencies money for them to carry on
helping them find suitable candidates who are appropriate for the job they are
wanting to fill. This cost will be included in the businesses expenditures and could be
reduced if the business finds their own employees.

Another disadvantage of Asda for using job centres and agencies is that they may
not care about finding the right person for the job and may only recommend a
candidate because they know they will be getting paid more. This will make it harder
for the businesses because they will need to spend money in getting the employee
for the job.

Internal recruitment

Asda uses both internal and external sources to recruit employees. Asda is a huge
retailer therefore this organisation makes good use of internal and external sources
for recruitment.

Asda uses many internal sources to recruit employees, for example promotions. If
employees within Asda are performing beyond expectations then there is a good
chance that they will be promoted. This can be beneficial for both Asda and the
employee. For example if there is a job vacant on a high post and Asda is looking for
an employee, Asda can select an existing employee and promote him/her to a higher
post. This will save Asda money and time and the employee will be working at a
better post, this may even involve a pay rise.

Asda also recruits internally using electronic bulletin boards and its company
newsletter. Internal Mail Asda has an internal mail system where only employees
can log into and access important news about the company. For example if there
was a post vacant in one of the Asda stores, before advertising externally Asda
could send all its employees a message through internal mail informing them about
the vacancy.

One advantage of Asda recruiting internally will be that the employee will know the
businesses work ethic and values and will have a clear understanding of what the
business needs them to do and will know their colleagues on a personal basis.
Internally recruiting will save the business time on looking for a qualified candidate.

Another advantage of Asda recruiting internally will be that if the business can't find a
suitable candidate to fill in this role then they will have other employees working in
that department who could share some responsibilities until they find another
employee. This will be suitable for Asda as it will be quick and easy and will save a
lot of time unlike external recruitment.

One disadvantage however for Asda recruiting internally will be that the business
must find someone else to fill in the role of the employee who has been offered a
higher position. This process could take time and if the business needs an employee
immediately, they might be forced to hire someone who doesn't have the right
qualifications.

Another disadvantage of Asda recruiting internally could be the rivalry employees
have with each other. This could cause tension between employees and managers
(who have been recently recruited) because they may not like the fact that they didn't
get picked to work in a greater role but their ex colleague did.
