- Atrium- thin walled, elastic, stretches as it collects blood
- Ventricle- thicker walled, contracts strongly to pump blood distance
Double circulatory system
- Pulmonary circulation- heart to lungs to heart
- Systemic circulation- heart to body to lungs
- Blood goes in and out of heart twice
- Double circulation required by mammals to maintain a higher blood pressure in
both the pulmonary and systemic circulation - ensures oxygen is delivered to
respiring tissues to maintain a high metabolic rate
- High metabolic rate in order to maintain high body temperature -
thermoregulate
