Enzymes
- Biological catalysts
- Globular proteins
- Intracellular- produced and function inside the cell
- Extracellular- secreted by cell and catalyse reactions outside cells
- Break down substrates using hydrolysis
Function
- Have an active site where specific substrates bind forming enzyme substrate complex
- Active site has specific shape - complimentary
- Substrates collide with enzymes active site
- Shape of active site determined by tertiary structure
Reaction types
- Catabolic- breakdown of complex molecules into simpler products
- Anabolic - building of more complex molecules from simpler ones
How they work
- Lower activation energy of reaction (activation energy is the amount of energy required by substrate to carry out
reaction)
- Provide alternative energy pathway
