Concept of place

Locale – The place where something happens or is set, or has a particular event associated with it

Location – Physically where a place is

Place – Location with meaning at a personal or social level

Sense of place – The subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place developed through
experience and knowledge

Experienced place – Places that people have spent time in and have developed a sense of place by
their experiences

Media place – Places that people have not been to but have had a sense of place created by the
depiction of the media

Insiders – Someone who is familiar with a place and feels welcome

Outsider – Someone who feels unwelcome or excluded from a place



Factors contributing to the character of places

Endogenous factors – the characteristics of the place itself or factors which have originated
internally

 Location, topography, physical geography, land use, built environment and infrastructure,
