The Nervous System

The Nervous System is divided into 2 sub systems:
- Central Nervous System (CNS)- brain + spinal cord
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)- eyes

Peripheral nervous System

The Peripheral Nervous System transmits messages via neurons, to and from the CNS.

It is made up of to further sub-divisions
- Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) governs the vital functions such as breathing,
heart rate, sexual arousal and stress responses.- unconsciously moving.
● Parasympathetic state (resting state) to sympathetic state (physiologically
aroused- reacting to a situation).
- Somatic Nervous System (SNS) controls muscle movement and receives info from
sensory receptors.- consciously moving.

The Endocrine System

The endocrine system works alongside the nervous system to control vital functions around
the body.
- Composed of many glands that release hormones directly into the bloodstream.
- Pituitary gland
- Pancreas
- Adrenal Gland
- Thyroid
- Hypothalamus
- Ovaries
- Testes

Hormones will affect any cell that has a receptor for that particular hormone.

One of the body’s major information systems that instructs other glands to release hormones
directly into the bloodstream. These hormones are carried towards target organs in the body.

Hormones are chemical substances that circulate in the bloodstream and only affect target
organs. Their effects are very powerful.
