Unit 3 Assignment 4 Marcus Chadwick

The role of the public services in enforcing diversity and providing equality of service

The public services have policies put in place to ensure equality and diversity. These policies are:

 Equal Opportunities policies
 Grievance procedures
 Bullying and harassment at work policies
 Anti-discrimination policies
 Recording and monitoring of equal opportunities data and complaints
 Complaints procedures for service users

Diversity issues

There are a lot of diversity issues in the community for the public services to deal with however they
try to minimise this by building a diverse work force.

Public Service employment and development of a diverse workforce through recruitment and staff
selection procedures

The public service struggle with providing a diverse workforce as it’s mainly men joining the services
like the army due to stereotyping. With racism a big aspect of everyday life they also struggle to get
ethnic minority groups to join also. So the recruitment of women and ethnic minority groups is very
difficult. It has been recorded that there are 25.1% women police officers meaning three quarters of
the police force are men. There are also only 4.4% police officers in England and wales which was
recorded in 2009.

Equal opportunities and anti-discrimination policies

This is a policy that ensures all people get treated equally in terms of recruitment, selection, training
and promotion regardless of their gender, age, race, or disability. These codes that are in place are
from the Equality and Human Rights commission and the public service also have to follow the acts
that promote equality such as the Employment Equality Regulations 2003 and 2006, Sex
Discrimination Act 1975 and Race Relations (Amendment Act (2000)

Grievance procedures

Grievance procedures is an action that needs to made when an employee has issues within the work
force such as being treated unfairly, being bullied or having a change in the role of job

Bullying and harassment at work policies

These are policies that are put in place to prevent bullying and harassment in the work place of the
services and these state what should be done if someone bullies or harasses another being. Bullying
and harassment can cause a decrease in motivation which can lead to them leaving the service
which would then lead to the performance levels of the services decreasing as the less people in the
services the less effective the services will be. These policies make sure each person in the services
treats others with respect and dignity.

Recording and monitoring of equal opportunities data and complaints

The public services are funded through taxes and donations therefore it’s important that equal
opportunities are given as it’s the public money. This ensures that data is being recorded to ensure
equal opportunities are given for stages such as recruitment and selection. It also records the
amount of complaints are given and how they have been sorted to ensure equality
