Citizenship
Citizenship is being a part of a community or country. Citizenship is also being a good citizen to fulfil
the needs of others and hold responsibility for yourself and everyone else. There are many ways that
can make you are citizen in the country or state you’re in such as:
Where you’re born
Your Family background
Where you currently live
If you pay tax
If you eligible to vote in elections
If you work
If you’re a student
The community activities you are involved in
What organisations you are a member of.
If you live in this country this does not mean you’re a legal citizen and even if you’re born in a
country this doesn’t make you a legal citizen as your parents may not be from the country.
Definition of Citizen and Citizenship
The Government defines citizenship on 3 main aspects which are Social and moral responsibility,
Political literacy, Community.
Social and moral responsibility
The most common way of being a legal citizen is when your parents are from that particular country
therefore you have all the requirements to be a citizen in that country. For example one way to
become a British citizen is if your parents are from the UK. Another way to become a British citizen is
if you’ve lived in the UK for longer 10 years so you could be from a different country but if you have
been in the UK for longer than 10 years you can be a British citizen. However there is another way to
define citizen which is a moral and political citizen who respects and contributes to society and to
certain communities. Being helpful and respecting the community can include things like doing
charity work, Volunteering and something as easy as picking up litter.
Community involvement
Community involvement is about having a passion or concern about the community you live in and
having a care about the neighbour in your community. Being involved in the community can be done
through volunteering in your area or being aware of environmental issues which could have an
impact on your community.
Political literacy
This means knowing the political side of society in your community, region and country, This involves
understanding how local and national governments work and knowing the role you can take in
democracy in terms of political issues which could involve voting for the party you want to make the
environment you live in better. Being involved in politics can be as simple as talking to your MP or
