professions. I will be talking about the job roles and what is needed to become a midwife and
a paramedic.

MIDWIFE

In order to become a midwife, you will need to have at least 5 GCSE’s with the grades A*- C.
This must include English language or literature as well as science subject. You will also
need 2 to 3 A-Levels in Science subjects and psychology or sociology. If you do not have A-
levels, you will need to have a course/qualification that is equivalent to it like a Level 3 BTEC
in Health and Social care.

The midwifery degree is a 3-year full time course, which is 40% placement and 40% self-
teaching, and 20% seminar/lecture based, which means most of the course is hands on and
practical. There are no apprenticeships for this degree, so it will be more beneficial for you to
have experience in health care like volunteering in hospitals or working with children in
nurseries.

As a midwife, you are required to help birth babies when mothers are in labour, provide
antenatal and postnatal advice which is health care for the babies and mother to prevent
them from life threatening diseases and to help through the first stages of child care. They
also offer support to babies, mothers and their families and help them with basic activities
relating to new-borns.

As a midwife you will need many skills and personal attributes to deal with all the situations
they will encounter. Some skills that you will need are team working skills, communication
and people skills. You will need to be good at teamwork because you will be working with
doctors and other healthcare professionals during child birth as anything could happen.
Communication skills are also important because you must be a good listener and be able to
tall to new mothers and their family members as well their partners. You will also need
people skills as you are working with new mothers which are emotional and need
reassurance and help with their babies and a lot support, especially for mothers who just had
their first baby.

Some personal attributes you must have as a midwife are a caring and understanding
attitude as the mother is in a painful situation and needs you to be comforting her and to
ensure her that everything is okay. You must be strong emotionally and mentally as you will
be dealing with a lot of deaths including still born babies or even mothers passing away due
to childbirth. You must also be patient as childbirth can take long and mothers might fail to
cooperate with you due to the pain they are in so it's important you stay calm and work with
the mother.
