Rishil Patel Assignment 17.1 Paul Cannon

M1 – Explain why projects can fail

1. Introduction

In this report I will be explaining why projects can fail whilst it is in the process of being built. The
main points that I will be explaining in this report, why projects can fail, are the following: Lack of
Teamwork and Communicatonn hort Time calen Poor Leadershipn and Poor Testng. As an additon
to this report, I will be giving three case study examples of projects that have failed and didn’t make
it to its final stage and for each example I will be explaining what case study is, why did the project
fail and what problems did the project encounter.

2. Why can projects fail?

2.1 Lack of Teamwork and Communication
When you, as a team are assigned to do a project, every member of the team needs to
be involved as well as communicatons need to be fowing too. A project can fail with the
lack of teamwork and communicaton put in because if the team members do not
converse with one another, this would afect the progress of the project and objectves
would not be completed by the deadline they have been giving. Teamwork along with
communicaton is important therefore it would speed up the process of getng far into
the project along with getng new ideas and to finish the project as a team, not by one
member of staf.

2.2 Short or Unrealistic Time Scale
Timescales are provided within a project in order to make sure the project is completed
within a certain tme. A short tmescale can be seen as an issue which can lead a project
to fail depending on the size of the project as well the number of members on the team.
The key recommendaton is that before even startng the project the team must plan
and decide how long will take to complete their product e.g. if it is a big project that
requires a lot of input then a larger tmescale would be best suited for that.

2.3 Obstacles/Constraints
A project that is in process can have a few obstacles coming along its way causing the
project to fail and to not achieve its desired goal in order to meet the purpose.

These constraints might be the following:
 Financial – e.g. no largescale investment might be allowed untl the following
year.

 Team – e.g. the skills needed in order start and complete the project. Maybe
there is someone on the team who doesn’t have a partcular skill to carry out
the task for the project. Time will be needed to be set aside in order to recruit
people and train them.
