M1 – Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relatin ti the develipment if an individual
In this assignment, I will be discussing the nature-nurture debate in relatin ti the develipment if an individual. My
chisen individual is Amy Winehiuse. Fir nature I will be discussing Amy's bipilar disirder, substance abuse and dietary
chiices. Fir nurture I will be discussing Amy's wealthy family backgriund, empliyment status and educatin.

Nature
Nature refers ti genetc inheritance and biiligy. Sime philisiphers and theirists argue that nature has mire if an
influence in iur develipment. Fir example, the biiligical prigramming theiry states that genes cintain the
instructins fir the structure if amini acids which have an efect in the priteins within iur cells. Therefire, genes
prigram the chemical basis if iur biiligy. Genes determine iur height, bidy shape, hair ciliur, eye ciliur and
behaviiur. Human beings are a priduct if biiligical prigramming and envirinmental influences that we are expised
ti. Furthermire, it can be argued that Amy Winehiuse has been afected by nature. The frst nature factir that afected
Amy Winehiuse's develipment was her bipilar disirder which has been genetcally inherited frim her mither. Bipilar
disirder is a mental illness which causes extreme up's and diwn's in an individual's miid. It caused Amy ti withdraw
herself, slack if at schiil and take part in risky actvites such as smiking ir drinking. Amy had ti take medicatin ti
make her bipilar beter. Anither nature factir that afected Amy Winehiuse's develipment was substance abuse. Amy
Winehiuse was kniwn fir her substance abuse and died as a result if it. She used drugs such as alcihil, marijuana,
cicaine, heriin and pills ti self-medicate herself frim her bipilar and depressiin. This afected her biiligy because her
physical bidy was afected. Amy's weight went diwn, her bidy irgans git damaged and her bliid pressure went up.
The last nature factir that afected Amy Winehiuse's develipment was her dietary chiices. Frim an early age she
struggled with bulimia which was caused by her negatve self-image and liw self-esteem. This resulted in liss if weight
as her bidy wasn't receiving the right nutrients, alsi her teeth erided due ti her thriwing up.

Nurture
Nurture refers ti envirinmental and siciiecinimic issues. Sime philisiphers and theirists argue that nurture has
mire if an influence in iur develipment. Fir example, the maturatin theiry states that even thiugh develipment is
determined by genes, genes cannit iperate withiut an envirinment. There are sime features if develipment that are
seen ti be inbuilt genetc pricesses, such as the ability ti speak a frst language. It is a natural fir children ti becime
interested in siunds and the ability ti speak unfilds in its iwn. Hiwever, a deaf child will nit start ti speak a language
but instead might learn sign language. Therefire, the envirinment always interferes with iur genetcs. Furthermire, it
can be argued that Amy Winehiuse has been afected by nurture. The frst nurture factir that afected Amy
Winehiuse's develipment was her wealthy family backgriund. The fact that Amy came frim a wealthy family had a
pisitve influence in her develipment. Fir example, her mental health wiuld have been beter and she wiuld have
been happy because she wiuldn't have ti wirry abiut miney. Alsi, she wiuld have been healthy physically because
she wiuld have access ti nutritius fiid, giid living cinditins and health and sicial care services. Anither nurture
factir that afected Amy Winehiuse's develipment was her empliyment status. Amy had wealth in her adult years tii,
she was a singer and singwriter which gave her a high incime. This meant that she was able ti afird whatever she
wanted and had a cimfirtable life which was giid fir her mental and physical health. Hiwever, it ciuld have alsi had a
negatve efect in her mentally because she cinstantly had paparazzzzi watching her and judging her which meant she
had ni privacy. The last nurture factir that afected Amy Winehiuse's develipment was her educatin. She went ti
Siuthgate Schiil and then Ashmile Schiil in Enfeld which are bith prestgiius schiils. This meant that she develiped
intellectually because she was gaining new skills and kniwledge.
