P2 - Describe a discriminatory practce in health and social care.
Infringement of rights - Culture
Infringement of rights is ignoring, abusing or neglectng a client's rights. Also, it can include not allowing
someone to practce their culture. For example, in a health and social care setng infringement of rights
can interfere with a patent's culture. One right that a patent has is the right to be treated equally, they
may be treated unequally due to their culture. Language is a part of a person's culture, and they can be
discriminated based on it. For instance, if someone who speaks Spanish is at a hospital ward where the
menus are in English, they would not be able to choose what food they want and would just have to take
what they are given.

Covert and Overt discriminaton - Sexuality
Covert discriminaton is hidden from the person being discriminated. For example, in terms of sexuality, a
nurse in a hospital who is homophobic may judge a gay/lesbian person in their head but not say it out loud.
This can mean that the treatment the person gets may be diferent, which can afect their health and well-
being. Whereas, overt discriminaton is being open about it. For example, in terms of sexuality, a
homophobic nurse in a nursing home who thinks homosexuality is wrong might talk about the gay/lesbian
patent with her colleagues. This would have the same efects as covert discriminaton, however, if the
person knows that they are being discriminated their recovery, health or mental health can be afected.

Prejudice - Disability
Prejudice is having negatve opinions of clients that are based on preconceived ideas, which come from
negatve assumptons about a person. In a health and social care setng, a person can be pre-judged based
on their disability. In health and social care, we will be dealing with disabled patents a lot, so it is
important to provide equal care and treatment for those with disabilites. For example, an elderly patent
in a care home who requires a wheelchair may be pre-judged by a care worker. The care worker may
assume that the patent also has other disabilites, and may start talking loudly to the person to make sure
they understand them. However, this may not be the case and the elderly patent may just have trouble
walking but they may have no other disabilites. This can afect the patent's mental health, as they may
feel isolated and misunderstood. The Disability Discriminaton Act prevents this kind of behaviour, and
makes it unlawful to discriminate against someone due to their disability. The act includes access to goods,
employment, facilites and service of organisatons, educaton, buying and rentng a property and transport
services.

Stereotyping - Gender
Stereotyping is making generalised assumptons about an individual, or a group of people. A person can be
discriminated based on stereotypes about their gender. For example, in a nursing home setng a male
applying for a job as a nurse may not get the job, as men are stereotypically supposed to have hands on
jobs such as working on cars. Also, if a man was to become a nurse, he may be looked down upon by
colleagues or patents. He may be seen as feminine or even homosexual, as a nurse is typically woman's
job. However, a female would be more likely to get the job as it is more socially acceptable for women to
be nurses rather than men, and women are seen as more loving and caring. This is unequal treatment, as a
