Unit 43
Technology in health and
social care services
Explain the use of information and communication technology in
health and social care (P1)

In this part of my assignment i am going to be explaining the use of ICT in
relation to health and social care. To begin with, information communication
technology is described as "the term is generally accepted to mean all
devices, networking components, applications and systems that combined
allow people and organizations (i.e., businesses, nonproft agencies,
governments and criminal enterprises) to interact in the digital world."
(Rouse, 2005).

Over the years many devices and technologies have been created to help
with the promotion of ICT. This includes PC's, mobile devices, tablets,
scanners, printers, internet, email etc. (Sharon, 2010, pg. 3). The type of
documents that can be created and used in ICT in relation to health and
social care include emails, reports, record sheets, care plans and booklets
(Sharon, 2010, pg. 3). Alongside this there are electronic record systems
which have patient and service user records with a summary of the care
given. Care records are often stored by the NHS, local GP's, prescription
services and more (Sharon, 2010, pg. 3). Its important that members of staf
are aware of the particular legislations and policies linked to patient/service
user data for e.g. Data Protection Act, Safeguarding Act and more.

National and local electronic systems

According to the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) formed in
April 2013, whom are "an executive, non-departmental public body and the
national provider of information, data and IT systems for patients, service
users, clinicians, commissioners, analysts, and researchers in health and
social care" (Hscic, 2015). Their role is to improve health and social care in
England by putting technology, data and information to work. They provide
national technology and information services and state "we are the centre of
excellence and leadership in the development and use of technology, data
and information." (Hscic, 2015). They ensure individual confdentiality by
ensuring that every citizen’s data is protected "We assure the quality, safety
and security of data and information fows across the health and social care
sector so that citizens will willingly share their data in the knowledge that it
will be kept confdential and secure." Citizens are also confdent that their
data will only be shared when appropriate and for their beneft (Hscic, 2015).
