Equality, Diversity, and Rights in
Health and Social Care
UNIT 2

Explain how national initiatives promote anti discriminatory practice
(P4)
National initiative comes under the same sector as anti-discriminatory
practice. There are 3 main national initiatives, these are conventions,
legislations and regulations. However code of conduct, charters and policies
and procedures also cover anti-discrimination. I believe it is similar to a
national campaign which helps to create issue awareness within individuals.
The way in which this promotes anti-discrimination is the domino efectt if
one person can see the problem and can address this others they will tend to
follow this opinion. This is very important towards society and even health
and social care as it helps with treating others equally despite their
diferences.
Over the years legislations, policies, procedures and codes of conduct have
been formed to make society a friendly, equal place.
Legislations:
The Human Rights Act of 1998 contains many things within it but overall
means you can take legal action against an individual or organisation that
disregards your human rights. This promotes anti-discriminatory as it gives
those the power to use their rights against someone. For example taking a
company to court for breaking the right to be safe in a hostel.
The Mental Health Act of 1983 is another important legislation as I believe it
was never accepted in past decades and people with any type of disability
were pushed away from society as if they are not a part of it. However this
act ensures actions to be taken to make sure those with difculties are given
the care and treatment needed for their own health and safety and for the
protection of others.
The Race Relations Act of 1965 according to Wikipedia was the frst
legislation in the United Kingdom to address racial discrimination. This act
outlawed discrimination on colour, race or ethnic or national origins in public
places. This promotes anti-discrimination as it enhances diversity and so
anyone who attempts to start a problem based on ones skin colour, ethnicity
etc can be easily prosecuted.
However, the Equality Act has replaced the Race Relations act, and a number
of others including Equal Pay Act 1970, Sex Discrimination Act 1975, and
Disability Discrimination Act 1995. In particular the Equality Act was signed in
2010 to legally protect people from discrimination in a workplace and society
generally. This helps promote anti discrimination it covers so many acts in
one, making it easier to understand and a lot stronger than most.
Code of conduct:
