Task One
Storyboarding
Storyboarding is essential in structuring an animation and deciding on the sequence of the
frames. The storyboard will [usually in brief] show the different frames and scenes which
interrelate throughout the animation.
The storyboard can provide an overview of the key scenes or it can provide in intricate detail
most of the frames within an animation - depending on the animation made.
Within the storyboard the boxes represent the screen and the designer draws the image(s)
which’ll appear on the screen [within the boxes]. The images which are placed outside of
the boxes will not be visible to the viewer. The drawings which are placed in the boxes are
what will be shown in a particular frame or scene.
Designers typically will add notes under each box describing what is happening. For example
plane moves from right of the scene to the left.
Storyboarding can be a rough noting of ideas done in draft form or it can be a formally
drawn storyboard whereby a team of animators will follow it throughout the project.

My storyboard for Key-Frame Animation
As you can see throughout this animation the plane enters from the right side of the screen
and exits on left side of the screen. I also plan to use the morphing technique giving the
impression that plane is getting closer as it moves from the left side of the screen to the
right.
Timings
Timing in animation is an art in itself and if done properly it can attract viewers, if done
wrong however it can repel them. A simple example being out of sync films, as a viewer you
will grow irritated and skip to the next channel as it hasn’t been done properly.
The frames and their rimes can be planned using a log sheet or a bar sheet. The complexity
of the animation will determine the intricacy of the sheets.
Key frames, frame numbering and naming
When designing an animation, you need to identify where your key frames will occur – this
is because these are the beginnings and ends of actions. The can be noted on the log sheet
or bar sheet.
It’s useful to know the frame numbers of each particular action. It is also good to name
sections making them easier to refer to - especially for when working with a team. Say an
animation has 5000 frames it is near impossible to remember each frame individually,
alternatively you will find it easier to number the scenes but this still won’t give a clear
identification as to what the scene is about within the animation. Therefore this is why it is
useful to name scenes within the animation – with names that reflect the content within the
animation.

Create the animation
It is essential within animation to create and follow a clear design. Adjustments can be
made in the process of making the animation however notes should be made of these
changes under the design as ‘amendments’.
Occupationally it is important that realistic deadlines are set as leaving the animation until
minute will more than likely result in a very poor animation.
Document
Purpose and description
The purpose of my animation is to capture the theme of travel. In meeting this criteria I will
produce a stop-frame and key-frame animation based around travel. The stop-frame
animation will be a series of drawings of swans played at such a speed as to create the
illusion of motion. The key-frame animation is of a tweened plane entering from the right
hand side of the screen, flying over an animated city and exiting on the left hand side of the
screen. I will be creating the animation in DrawPlus yet I hope to make these animations
available to watch on Internet explorer [by exporting the file as a Shockwave Flash Object].
Additional notes:
Documentation must state clearly the objective of the project and contain a detailed
description of how this will be achieved. This should be based around the clients brief.
The purpose should include a clear explanation of the core objective and other details such
as where it might be displayed.
The format and target file size
I will be creating the animations using DrawPlus therefore the default format will be .dpa. I
will then export both files as Shockwave Flash Objects [allowing the file to be more universal
than that of .dpa] and as for the target file sizes the Stop-Motion Animation will I hope be
around 5KB and the key-frame will be around 40KB.
Additional notes:
The format of the animation will need to be decided before beginning the implementation
of the design. The target file size will help determine the complexity of the animation and
also the amount of compression needed in order to make it suitable.
The storage of the animation during production will need to be decided by all of the
animators involved. The backing up of files is essential, the larger projects will need serval
backups – at least one of which must be held off-site in a fireproof, waterproof container.
