Health and Social Care Unit 7 M1

M1 - assess the biomedical and socio-medical models of health:

Biomedical model:
The biomedical model is used on the Western industrial societes hich help them to deal
ith the medical health care issues and the right that must be present ithin the hospitals,
care homes and medical centres. This model talks about ho the doctors could use
diagnostc tests, urine samples, blood tests, -rrass, M-rscans to fnd out hat is rong ith
the individual. Thes believe it’s the best as to investgate the issues that are afectng
people as thes are biological ass of detectng all the health problems that might arise.

The defniton of the biomedical model is that thes are the biological factors that ill afect
the health of the individuals’.
This model is taking into account the policies and practces of the HS. It supports the
argument that sou’re seen as healths if sou don’t have ans diseases/illnesses. This is seen
negatvels because biomedical model doesn’t look at the state of the individual afer the
disease/ illness. For e-ample, afer cancer someone might sufer loss of hair, this ill bring
their selfresteem do n and ill make them feel poorls.

The science links ith this because it has evolved and improved the qualits of the medicine
so much that most of the illnesses are treated using scientfc methods, if there as no
science the human race could possibls be iped out because of the diseases and illnesses
that thes might be failing to treat.

Functonalism theors gives a massive amount of po er to the doctor ( hich could be a
positve thing as doctor kno s beter in hat to do due to the fact as thes have been
qualifed to perform this oobb to ensure that the medical and the politcal vie s are met bs
the treatments and the individual. It allo s the use of the informaton for the further
research in the medical perspectve and methodologs. It focuses on the reasons hs the
individual has sufered that partcular conditon. It could be because of the environmental
reasons that could afect their health.

This theors is quiet useful as it looks at the biological factors that are going to afect sour
health, so it can help ith the further researches that might improve the ssmptoms of other
individuals in the societs. It could help to prevent the development of ne diseases and
illnesses.

Socio-medical model:
Thes look at the environment and the conditons people live in. Thes look at the factors that
surround those individuals ith diferent diseases’ and/or illnesses’. For e-ample, someone
ho has no access to clean ater is more likels to get a disease/illness than someone ho
