Unit 2 Buyer’s Guide
P1: Explain the functin if cimputer hardware cimpinents
Internal Component
CPU
CPU stands for Central Processing Unit.
A CPU processes data which was received from a Communicaton evice. It is the brains of the
computer which listens to all of the instructons from the input and output devices which then
makes the inputs/outputs do what they are supposed to do.
Motherboard
A motherboard (also known as the mainboard or system board) is a piece of equipment which
connects all the components together. Without it, the components wouldn’t stay in the computer.
The CPU and RAM are just two of the components which must be plugged into the motherboard’s
interface to receive its power. It is now very common for a video interface and sound card to be built
in or added to the Motherboard as this keeps laptops and tablets and even in desktops to keep the
types of computers small in size. . Without a Motherboard, nothing inside of your computer will
work as it allows all parts to receive power and communicate with one another. The Motherboard
must be screwed in for extreme security. There are diferent sizes of Motherboard so it depends on
the size of your system case whether or not it will ft into it. esktop motherboards, cases and power
supplies come in all diferent sizes so all three must be compatble to work together properly.
Bios
Bios (short for Basic Input / Output System). It is a chip on the motherboard containing instructons
and setup on screen. The setup screen is there to say what hardware it should load plus the
operatng system and drivers it needs to load for the start-up. The Bios is also there is say if there are
any errors in your computer system.
Power Supply
Power Supply (also known as PSU) is a main generator that provides power, allowing the computer
to run. The power supply provides all of the diferent voltages your computer needs to operate
properly.
C ( irect Current) Power Supply
A C power supply provides a voltage of either positve or negatve to its load. epending on the
design of the C Power Supply, it could either be powered from a C source or from the power
mains which is an AC source.
AC-to- C Supply (Alternatng Current-to- irect Current Power Supply)
