Unit 16 – Passenger Transport
M3 – Compare the effectiveness of passenger transport provision for two tourist destinations

In this assignment I will be comparing the effectiveness of passenger transport provision for London and
Bath.

Both destinations have a wide range of transport available. By having a wide range will make it appeal
more to domestic and inbound tourists.

The cultural town Bath has very good ranges of transport considering the size of it is a lot smaller than
London. They have one train station located right in the centre of Bath. The London train/underground
network can be seen as very confusing and extremely busy. Accessibility is not a problem at this train
station. Because of its central location tourists are right next to shop and there is a wide range of
accommodation available in centre. The train station also has really good disabled access. When I looked
on the website here’s all of the disabled features they have: accessible ramps, disabled toilets, hearing
system and disabled parking. Bath Spa might appeal more to disabled visitors than London because it’s not
as crowed and busy. The same as London Bath has taxi’s and busses however they aren’t as frequent as
they are in London. This is because the size of the place.

Unlike London, Bath does not have its own airport. This could put some inbound tourists off when coming
here. The nearest airport is Bristol. Busses operate every half hour and takes 50 minutes however. Or a
train has to be caught from Bristol Airport to Bristol Temple Meads and then onto Bath.

London has a much wider range of transport which is more upgraded than Baths. The underground is an
easy way to get around the city; it also enables visitors to see all of the sights in London. The London
Underground offers a great promotion at New Year’s Eve. Between 11:45pm and 4:30am, the Tube,
Overground, buses, trams, and the DLR will be free on New Year’s Eve in London. New Year’s Eve is a
popular time for people to visit London. People come from all over the world to watch the fireworks and
stunning pyrotechnics from the river on London’s famous South Bank, presented by the Mayor of London.
However sometimes at busy point of the years like this some stations close because of crowd control.

Another good transport provision London has which Bath hasn’t is the Eurostar Train which arrives at St
Pancras. This enables visitors from Europe to get the train into London. It’s good for people who are scared
of flying and cannot drive. Here is what an article dated on the 8th of March 2012 had to say about Eurostar:
‘’ Eurostar has said that its sales increased last year as passenger numbers rose 2% to 9.7 million, Eurostar
had one of its busiest weekends on record during the weekend following the marriage of Prince William
last year, and expects another strong year because of the Queen's Jubilee and the London Olympic Games’’.
To mark its 20th anniversary in 2014, Eurostar unveiled its state of the art new e320 train at St Pancras
International station. With the e320 due to enter commercial service at the end of this year, passengers
can look forward to an unparalleled level of style, comfort and service.

I have come to the conclusion that London has a better, more effective range of transport than Bath. Firstly
I think that the size of the location plays a big part. Because of how big it is London needs more functioning
transport. London is one of the worlds most visited locations and the most popular place to visit in the UK.
They need to make sure that they have transport available for every tourist. By constantly improving their
transport London will be appealable to tourists.
