Introduction to Sociology – Assignment 1

Explain briefly the difference between consensus and
conflict perspectives, using an example.

The consensus perspectives believe in agreement. The theory suggests that
hierarchy in society is based on a system of common norms and values. Whereas
conflict theory suggests that social order in society is based on a system of
inequality. One example of this is that in the consensus theory, they believe that
social change happens slow. Whereas in conflict theory, they believe that social
change can happen quickly and in a disorganised, messy way. Another example
is that people who have a conflict perspective believe that social order is a way
that people who have more power try to control society to make it how they
want. Whereas a person with a consensus perspective sees social order as a way
to create agreement and peace within society.

Describe how culture, socialisation and identity link together
in sociology.

The way we view ourselves and others determines our outlook on society as a
whole. The way an individual is brought up by their family, and how they are
influenced to behave and interact with others shows a rough idea of how they
view themselves. Culture guides a person on how they are supposed to behave
and interact with others, as well as what is expected of them in the group of
people around them. Someone’s identity is the way they see themselves and the
way other people see them. It is usually based on race, gender and class.
Someone’s personal identity can be altered based off their culture and who
bought them up. Someone’s idea of culture and how they act can alter as they
grow due to the influence of the people they decide to be around. Culture,
socialisation and identity all link together as it influences how we see ourselves
and how others see us, as well as how we act and work in social settings.

Explain how social stratification is different from social
differentiation?

Social stratification is a name given for the way society is divided by the order of
hierarchy. This is usually divided by class, power, income and family background.
Social differentiation is the way society fits individuals into groups depending on
their features and characteristics. These include their biological, physical, and
cultural factors and features. This is usually divided by ethnicity, age and religion.

These are different from each other as you can change your position in the social
stratification scale by getting a better job and having a better lifestyle with your
income. Whereas, with social differentiation, you are categorised based off the
stereotypes that society have like your race that you can’t fully change.
