Discuss the characteristics of good information.
Information is used for a lot of different purposes and should always be a good quality of
information. Good characteristics could be any from, valid, reliable, timely, fit-for-purpose,
accessible, cost effective, accurate, relevant and understandable by user.
Valid.
Valid information can be used for all needs as it will be correct and reliable. An example of where
valid information is important is when a college collects the student’s personal data such as
medical problems age etc. this information would need to be valid because if there was anything
was to happen and the information wasn’t correct then it could affect the health of the student..
Reliable.
Reliable information is very trustworthy and accurate. This would come from a source that has
little to no faults. When reliable information is used there should be reference that is clearly
shown for everyone to know where it comes from and so that they can see it is reliable. An
example of when reliable information is used could be, in a college they would need to know the
correct cost of items purchase for the canteen and the correct amount of sales intake. This
information must be reliable as there will only be a set amount of budget for them to spend and
they will need to know that the income matches the sales of products.
Timely.
All information should be on time for deadline of all projects. If information is given late it could
become irrelevant. For example, if British Telecom’s give the deadlines for a project out late then
the employees will not be able to get the work done on time as they was not given their
information in a timely matter.
Fit for Purpose.
Information that is fit-for-purpose would be used for specific needs and would be relevant to the
use. For example, if British Telecom’s where looking a user’s data and where given sales report
then this wouldn’t be fit for purpose as the information given is not what they are looking for.
Accessible.
Information should be kept in an easy and accessible place that whoever needs the information
will be able to get it. For example, when British Telecoms are doing a group project they would
keep the work that is done to be easy for everyone working on that project to get access to it. If
the information was not easily accessible then the employees will not be able to branch they work
from the work done in a previous step.
Cost Effective.
Some information that will be needed for a business would be cost effective. For example, British
Telecoms will spend a certain amount of money on a survey to find out the opinion of their
audience so that they can make more of a profit. information that costs less to get then the profits
that will be made would be cost effective.
