Describe the Features and Functions of Information
Systems.
Data.
The main input for information systems is data which would be used create/show information
that the company can use to make improvements. When storing data, it should be stored in the
most efficient way such as keeping with data like its purpose. To keep all information that is
outputted from data it should be accurate and fit-for-purpose so not to negatively affect the
company. If information is outputting is not the correct form will not guaranty effectiveness and
can cost more and take longer to generate.
People.
For data to be collected and process then people will need to have some input for this to happen.
For people to get the most out of information systems then they will need to have the right
training and skill to be able to get the most out of what they do. People will need to make sure
that all data collected is valid and fit-for-purpose before submitting it.
Hardware.
It is necessary to have hardware as it will run all the systems. Depending on how big the company
is then the hardware type could vary as small companies won’t need as high quality hardware as
bigger companies. Examples of hardware are PC or Servers. If there is a large company then the
server that would needed to be used would be a IS this is so that it can cope with the amount of
data that will be processed and stored on it. A smaller company would on use PCs will a large
amount of Processing power with a large amount of storage, the components that are used would
also need to be up-to-date so that the management information system (MIS) runs effectively.
Software.
For correct and effective information to be created the businesses would need to have the correct
software with the right features that are needed for the work. If the software doesn’t have to
correct features then the staff may find it hard to efficiently do the job and analyse the data
reports.
Telecommunications.
Telecommunications is very important within a company as when information has been created it
may need to be passed on to others in the company. A lot of information will be passed on to
other departments which would normally be done through the internet however this can course
come security problems and could breach the Data Protection Act. A lot of companies will have
their own intranet which will allow them to send information around the company safely. For a
company to run smoothly the telecommunications will need to be safe and work efficiently.
Functions.
Information systems allows for functions such as storing, processing and producing output
information to be performed. It would also have control over the flow and feedback loop of the
information. The would be open and closed systems within information systems.
