Illustrate the Information Flow Between Different
Functional Areas.
Internal Information Flow.
Information within a business will flow from department to department, information could flow
upwards, downwards or Laterally.
Flows Upwards.
When information is flowing upwards then that means that the lower level workers are sending
information to the higher ups such as the research department, they would then look over this
information and then turn that sales data into information about how products are selling.
Flows Downwards
If information was flowing downwards then this means that the higher ups are sending
information down to the lower level workers such as they could be giving them their work
schedules.
Laterally.
When information flows laterally it means that employees that work with each other sharing
information with each other such as ideas or work, for example a programing department would
share their work with each other as they would all have their own part in the project. Laterally
information doesn’t just have to just stay in one department it also means it can be passed to
other departments that are on the same work level.
Internal Flow to External Bodies.
this is when one business gives information to another business. A business will need to
communicate with suppliers for example. The purchasing department will give the suppliers
information about what stock they need to order.
Information Flow Diagram.
If a business deals with merchandise, then they will have multiple information flows. Down blow
is an example of the information low inside a business.

the diagram above shows how all departments are involved with each other which all starts from
the manager, this is the highest part of the business and then the information is passed down the
lines to the lower levels of the company.
