Unit 4
P5 : Explain the physical and psychological
changes which may be associated with ageing.
In this assessment, I am going to discuss the physical changes that can be associated with
ageing such as; Alzheimer’s disease, Menopause, Heart disease and Arthritis. The
psychological changes I will be discussing are the effect of losing a partner, retirement and
low self-esteem. Although, this will be a general facts and information and not about my
individual as there wasn’t any information.
Physical changes
Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer disease is the most common cause of dementia. Dementia is set of symptoms
that can include memory loss, difficulties with thinking, problem-solving and language.
These symptoms occur when the brain is damaged by certain diseases, including Alzheimer
disease. The symptoms of Alzheimer disease are generally mild to start with but they get
worse over time and start to interfere with daily life. Such as; memory loss that disrupts
daily life, challenges in planning for solving problems, difficulty completing familiar tasks at
home, at work or at leisure, confusion with time or place, trouble understanding visual
images and spatial relationships, new problems with words in speaking or writing,
misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps, decreased or poor judgement,
withdrawal from work or social activities and changes in mood and personality. Although,
over the years the diseases increase with worse symptoms. To reduce the risk of Alzheimer
you should get plenty of omega-3 fats, regular exercise, healthy diet, mental stimulation,
sleep regularly, stay away from stress and etc.
Menopause
Menopause is when a woman stops having menstrual cycles (periods) and is not able to
conceive any more. Menopause is a normal condition that all women experience as they
age. The ages of menopause are between 40-60 years old and changes from woman to
woman. The symptoms of menopause will have hot flashes, a sudden feeling of warmth
that spreads over the upper body and often with blushing and some sweating. The other
common symptoms around the time of menopause include; irregular or skipped periods,
insomnia, mood swings, fatigue, depression, irritability, racing heart, headaches, joint and
muscle aches and pains, change in libido, vaginal dryness and bladder control problems.
After menopause, women are more likely to have; osteoporosis, heart disease, a poorly
working bladder and bowel, poor skin elasticity, poor muscle power and tone and
weakening in vision.
