M1: Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation
to the development of an individual.

In this assessment, I will be discussing what nature and nurture is and how can it affect the
development of my individual which is Angelina Jolie.

The nature vs nurture debate was first suggested by Francis Galton. He was influenced by
Darwin’s book called ‘On the Origin of Species’ after this he started to investigate heredity
and the environment and how it can affect people's development.
Nature theory
The nature theory states that it is our genes that determines our physical development,
such as; our eye colour, height, hair colour, colour of your skin and many more known as
innate qualities. What the theory is trying to say is that your personality, behaviour, sexual
preferences and all the others come from are inherits too.
Nurture theory
Nurture theory states that the person's environment is the main influence over people’s
behavioural traits. For example, if a person does criminal acts it's because they have been
influenced by it through their environment whether it may be by people around them e.g.
family or friend influencing them to steal. For example, a psychologist called John Watson
stated that he can pick a random baby and ‘train’ them to be any specialist that he wants
regardless of the ethnicity, race and talents. Philosopher John Locke believes that we are
born with a blank mind, called ‘tabula rasa’. He believes that as we get older and learn
things we are affected by them as it is our environment.
Development of Angelina Jolie with the Nature vs Nurture debate: I will be writing about
Angelina Jolie’s childhood stage and adulthood stage and how it has affected her physical,
intellectual, emotional and social developments.
Childhood
Physical
Nature has affected Angelina Jolie’s physical features as they are inherited from her
biological mother and father. This supports the nature theory of the debate.
Intellectual
Angelina Jolie has been affected from nature theory for her intelligence because her father,
mother and brother all is a successful actress so example of this, is her family’s intelligence
and ability has passed through her inherits. However, her intelligence was mostly affected
