Transport in mammals
The cardiovascular system is made up of the heart and a system of
interconnecting tubes, blood vessels. The blood remains in these vessels so
the system is known as a closed blood system.
Blood travels twice through the heart in a complete circuit
Blood is pumped out of the left ventricle into the aorta and then to te
rest of the body (except lungs)
Returns to the right side of the heart in the vena cava
This is called systemic circulation
Blood is pumped to the lungs by the pulmonary arteries
After blood has passed through the lungs it returns to the left side of
the heart in the pulmonary veins
This is called pulmonary circulation
This combination of pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation
makes a double circulation system
