The following document contains my structured and easy to read condensed notes filled with great diagrams for all of Biology AQA A level. The boxes for every chapter contain all the concepts you need to know for each chapter with the notes are followed below. Notes are bite sized and will help with revision and memorisation. Do not fully rely on these notes, this is the absolute minimum needed to know to pass your A level biology exams! To achieve a higher mark, you will need to do extra research revision and practice questions on the yellow highlighted words. I also encourage watching videos for anything you are really unsure about. Required practicals not included in these notes.

● All life shows the same basic biochemistry including carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and
nitrogen
● Many organic molecules are made up of a chain of individual molecules
○ Monomers join together to form polymers
■ E.g monosaccharides join to make polysaccharides

● Carbohydrates
○ Test for reducing sugar: Heat with Benedict’s reagent and if it turns yellow, green,
orange or brick red there is a reducing sugar.
■ Non reducing sugar: After completing reducing sugar, heat the new
sample with dilute HCl and neutralise with NaHCO3. Add Benedicts again

○ Alpha glucose structure




○ Beta glucose structure

● Disaccharides
○ Maltose → alpha glucose + alpha glucose
○ Sucrose → glucose + fructose

■ Amylose - unbranched and coiled for storage (compact)
■ Amylopectin - branched so glucose can be released quickly
○ Cellulose

● Test for starch: Iodine turns Blue/Black in the presence of starch
