motivation for Romulus:
Aeneas – make 3 Romulus was a past hero who provides a path for Aeneas to follow because after all his fighting peace

does not know who these individuals are and when evaluating how successful this event was in
motivating Aeneas we can see that it is limited because Aeneas may not realise that these individuals
are his direct relatives.
Saturn:
During the golden age, Augustus’s reign is related to the reign of ‘what men call the golden age’ and
this tells Aeneas that he will also follow this path. However, Aeneas does not know who Augustus is so
we could argue that he would not realise that this is his path but the fact that Saturn is spoken about
shows the divine favour that Aeneas has and how Aeneas’s journey is clearly supported by the gods.
Hercules: the fact that he is worshipped as a hero -> when Aeneas completes his mission, he will be
similarly worshipped. The Arcadians are performing their yearly rites in honour of Hercules when
Aeneas arrives. Story of Hercules VS Cacus (Aeneas will be like Hercules -> the furor required when
defeating Turnus/ both saviour figures freeing the people from a terrorizing force.
Depiction of shield – Aeneas doesn’t understand the images -> is he fully motivated or just mindlessly
following the commands of the gods?
He talks to the god of the Tiber – Ascanius’ foundation of Alba Longa -> positive omen of the white
sow with 30 piglets: nurturing figure; 30 year time frame
Epithets reinforce a sense of Aeneas’s fatherly qualities – ‘descendant of Dardanus’, ‘father Aeneas’
and there is another comparison to Anchises – Evander recognises him because of likeness to Anchises
– guest-friendship already exists between them.
