,Approaches:

1. Influence of childhood experiences:
- Childhood experiences shape our adult personalities.
- Psychological development in childhood=
Psychosexual stages.
- Each stage represents the fixation on libido.
- Each stage is associated with a body part there are 5
stages Freud identified.
- If one becomes fixated on a stage, it can have long
lasting effects.
- 2 types= 1. Frustration= Needs have not been met
- 2. Overindulgence= more than satisfied
they become too comfortable or reluctant to move on
to the next stage.

- 1. Oral 0-18 months= mouth, sucking, chewing=
breastfeeding Frustration= sarcasm and pessimism
 overindulgence= gullible and needy

- 2. Anal 18 months-3yrs= withholding or expelling
faeces, potty training Frustration= stubborn overly
tidy.  overindulgence= messy, disorganised

- 3. Phallic 3-5 years genitals/ masturbation= Oedipus
complex meaning attachment to the parent of the
opposite sex super ego and gender identity self
assured may have problems with sexuality.

, - 4. Latency 5yrs puberty = little to no sexual
motivation, want world knowledge no fixations as
no pleasure focus

- 5.gentital puberty onwards heterosexual
intercourse if complexes are resolved in phallic
stage then they could have a well-developed adult
personality.

Link to relationship:
-Eg- overindulgence on oral stage may lead a person to be
needy in a relationship
Eg- Oedipus complex needs to be resolved in the phallic
stage= a boy will resent his father as he desires his mother.
This is resolved when he identifies with his father. This allows
the boy to develop normal healthy relationships.

2. Unconscious mind
- Like an iceberg much goes on under the surface
- There is the conscious, preconscious and unconscious.
- Conscious is logical.
- Unconscious ruled by pleasure seeking= cannot be
directly accessed but can express itself through
dreams.  this drives out conscious behaviour.  so
much conflict that it will show in symbols.
