Clonal proliferation

2nd lymphoid organs

(Image source: Kuby Immunology 7th edition, page 15) (Owen, Punt & Stranford, 2013)

Binding of 1 lymphocyte receptor to 1 antigen  clonal proliferation of stem cells (clonal selection &
expansion driven by antigen)

Deletion: Process of eliminating T or B cells that have too high a specificity OR specific to “self” molecules
for antigens (after they are made)

(i) Each lymphocyte bears 1 type of receptor with a unique specificity
(ii) Binding to lymphocyte receptor to specific antigen  activate lymphocyte
(iii) Activated lymphocyte starts to differentiate  daughter lymphocytes/effector cells have
similar receptors
(iv) Lymphocytes specific to “self” molecules are deleted  absent from mature lymphocytes
