Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation aims to restore the functions to a normal or near normal level, after an injury takes place.
Rehabilitation is not restricted to physical characteristics. We need to consider the psychological rehabilitations of an
athlete also. Treatment is based upon an accurate diagnosis. An effective rehabilitation programme should use
ATCISIT.

Stages of rehabilitation
There are 5 rehabilitation stages.
Stage 1: Acute stage
Treatments could include:
PRICED
Cryotherapy
Electrotheroy
Stage 2: Sub-acute stage
Aims of this stage:
Improve flexibility
Optimal loading
Treatments at this stage could include:
Massage
Stretching
Cryotherapy
Range of motion
Stage 3: early rehabilitation stage
Aims of this stage:
Start to fully weight bear
Restore strengths
Activate muscles
Proprioception and neuromuscular control
Treatments at this stage could include:
Isometric exercises at first
Stretching
Thermotherapy
Cryotherapy
Stage 4: Late rehabilitation stage
Prior to commencing this stage, the athlete MUST ensure there is:
NO significant inflammation
No swelling
Range of movement in a pain free range.
Ability to undertake some weight bearing exercise
