Essay Plan
What is the most predominant factor in determining sexual orientation and how have we
seen this evolve over time?

Introduction:
 Define what sexuality is
 State the different types and what they entail
 State how and when sexual orientation is identified
 Overall trends in the size of the LGBTQ+ community and explain if these how these
trends differ spatially and temporarily
 Briefly outline the factors that affect sexuality that will be later discussed in the
essay. Specifically debating as to which factors within nurture and nature
predominantly influence sexuality.

Potential Problems:
 It may be increasingly hard to find up to date and reliable facts and figures regarding
the size of the LGBTQ+ community, this is not a common question in a consensus
globally. In addition these figures only include known non heterosexuals E.G 
countries by which non heterosexual activity is illegal will not ask but rather presume
as well as the figures will not include those who continued to be ‘closeted’.
 There are many different types of sexuality so would be unwise to discuss all of them
 There are varying definitions of sexuality /sexual orientation and these are often
confused with gender identification, also a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

How these can be overcome:
 Infer the size from data such as graphs.
 By looking at many definitions and a summarised clear definition that can be made
that holistically acknowledges all aspects of sexuality.

Nurture:
Historically – depatholgy and declassification of homosexuality as an illness stated by the
DSM 5 as well as the enforcement of a patriarchal heteronormative society. As a result, this
may influence sexual identity as it is now seen as normal to question and therefore often
deviate from the heteronormative society thus increasing the size of the LGBTQ+
community.
Sense of place created in society – Stonewall riots and social movements began to
normalise the identification of homosexuals meaning it became acceptable to identify in this
way. As a result, it led more to question their sexual orientation and be open to change
promoting itself to be an important factor in determining sexuality.
EVALUATION:
Many places continue to view homosexual activity as an illness or a sign of madness
therefore creating a stigma which in theory could deter some from identifying as non-
heterosexual however, the rising number of the LGBTQ+ community insinuates that this has
not been the case. Reducing the factors predominance in determining sexuality.
