ACHIEVEMENT
, EXTERNAL FACTORS AND ETHNIC
DIFFERENCES IN ACHIEVEMENT
• Cultural deprivation-cultural deprivation theory sees the underachievement
of some ethnic groups as the result of inadequate socialisation in the home.
This explanation follows the aspects of intellectual and linguistic skills,
attitudes and values and lastly, family structure and parental support.
• Intellectual and linguistic skills-cultural deprivation theorists argue that
many children from low income black families lack intellectual simulation. This
has a negative effect as it leaves them poorly equipped for school as they
aren’t able to develop reasoning and problem solving skills. Bereiter and
Engelmann see the language spoken by low-income black American families as
inadequate to achieve successfully in education. It is seen as ungrammatical,
disjointed and incapable for expressing abstract viewpoints.
