The Awakening
Chapter 11
How does Chopin use dialogue effectively to reveal the Pontellier’s relationship in this chapter?
What is the significance of the events in this chapter?
Chopin uses simple blunt language to show the resistance from Edna and the contrast of the
demand from Leonce who expects obedience but doesn’t fight her over it. The significance of these
events is showing how Edna is learning to act on her impulses instead of obeying the men around
her.
Chapter 12
What is the significance of the lovers and the lady in black?
What impression is given of Mariequita? What, do you think, is her role in the narrative?
How does the change in setting effect the character of Edna?
The lovers represent the stereotypical expectations of a couple during this time and the lady in black
shows how a woman is supposed to be loyal to only her husband even in death. Mariequita is a
pretty young girl that works on the island, I believe her role in the narrative is to show Roberts flirty
behaviour, as well as draw the reader the the special attention Robert gives Edna. The change in
setting makes Edna appear as very carefree and not as a married woman.
Chapter 13
What is the significance if the events in the church?
How does the visit to Madame Antoine’s affect Edna?
The church shows how Edna is readjusting to her new found sense of freedom and restlessness as
she barely slept the night before, as well as not eating a lot. This caused her to become dizzy and
drowsy. The visit to Madame Antoines gives Edna a new found sense of awakening as she cleans her
face after a long sleep and finds that she is ‘glowing’.
Chapter 14
How is Edna’s relationship with Robert developing here?
Edna is starting to realise that the feelings she has for Robert are more than just friendship, as she
gets upset at the idea of Robert never coming back.
Chapter 15
Why do you think Chopin presents a time lapse between the previous chapter and this one?
What is the effect of Chopin’s use of different voices in the opening of this chapter?
What is the significance of language to the novel as a whole?
How has Edna’s character changed here and how are these changes presented?
I think Chopin uses a time lapse to show the sudden change in attitude between Edna and Robert.
The use of different voices creates a very chaotic setting with lots of noise and confusion. The
