P1

P1 Write a report explaining what types of information the company uses i.e. quantitative,
qualitative, primary and secondary. Include where the information comes from (include at
least 2 external sources), where it is used within the functional areas of the company (at
least 3 internal functional areas) and how it is communicated. (Relate all to Urban Clothing
Case Study)

TYPES OF INFORMATION

QUANTITATIVE

This is where data is measured in numbers or values, within the company Urban Clothing
this could be used to determine the amount of sales they have had overall or with a specific
brand of clothing. It could also measure the amount of stock they get in each week
compared to how much they sell.

QUALITATIVE

Qualitative data is where it is an opinion or something that can’t be measured. Within a
company this could relate to a survey about the customer service or the range of brands
that they sell, it can also be used so that the company has feedback, and they know what to
do to improve.

PRIMARY

Primary data is where a person goes and get the information themselves and not through
someone else. The way this could be used within Urban Clothing is where the employees
ask the customers to fill out a survey on what they liked whether that be brand or type of
material.

SECONDARY

Secondary data is where it is collected by someone else and you use that data. This could be
done when a company hires people to go out and get the public to answer questionnaires
about them this is classed as secondary data because the employees aren’t getting the
information themselves.

, P1

TWO EXTERNAL SOURCES (used by Urban Clothing)

An external source could be surveys/questionnaires these are classed as being an external
source because they are asking members of the public questions about their brand/business
and they also may be hiring third party people to go out and do this for them.

Another external source might be a clothing manufacturer where they make the clothes for
Urban Clothing to sell in their store, this is classed as an external source as they aren’t
working within the company, and they are a separate company themselves.

SPECIFY HOW INFORMATION IS COMMUNICATED

Employees within the company may communicate a few different ways the first could be
through email, where they may attach data or forward someone else’s email to all the other
employees. Another way they may communicate is over the phone, they may use the phone
to communicate to other manufacturers as well as other branches across the country.
