Answer all questions in this section.

0 1 This question is about steel spheres rolling along an inclined track.
Figure 1 shows an end view of a ‘U-shaped’ track with a sphere inside the track.
The distance between the internal edges of the track is 10 mm.

Figure 1

The track is inclined at an angle θ to a horizontal bench as shown in Figure 2.
The walls of the track are transparent. A line XY is drawn on the bench at the lower
end of the track. XY is perpendicular to the track.

Figure 2

A sphere of diameter 8 mm is placed at position 1 at the raised end of the track.
When released, the sphere rolls a distance L to position 2 at the lower end of
the track.

A student releases the sphere from rest at position 1 and starts a stopwatch. box

During the time the ball is rolling, the student moves to look along the line XY.
The watch is stopped at the instant when the sphere reaches position 2.

0 1 . 1 The student looks along XY to judge when to stop the watch.

State one advantage of looking along the line XY.
[1 mark]

The student makes repeated time measurements, t1 to t8, to determine the average
time T for the sphere to roll from position 1 to position 2.

Table 1 shows the data recorded by the student.

Table 1

t1 / s t2 / s t3 / s t4 / s t5 / s t6 / s t7 / s t8 / s

3.80 3.91 3.86 3.82 3.87 3.48 3.81 3.89

The student has identified the t6 measurement as anomalous.
Using the remaining seven readings, the student calculates that T = 3.85 s.

0 1 . 2 Suggest one reason for the anomalous measurement.
[1 mark]

0 1 . 3 Calculate the percentage uncertainty in the student’s result for T.
[1 mark]

percentage uncertainty = %
