IR seminar 11
Poverty and Development, and Conclusion
What do we mean by ‘neoliberal’ economic policies?
Neo-liberal economic policies are policies that are imposed by typically Western nations
which advocate high levels of capitalism. These economic policies often do not distribute
wealth but encourage individualist cultures of every man for themselves.
Do you agree that neoliberal economic policies can positively contribute to poverty
reduction?
Neoliberal economic policies can encourage independence and self-sufficiency among a few
but as a whole would be largely unsuccessful with helping large scale poverty reduction as
the level of income should increase evenly and to everyone to effectively reduce poverty.
Do you agree that IR is now in a post-Westphalian phase?
With the growth of bodies such as the UN the power of the states has decreased. These
governing in bodies have the power to intercept in states and prevent them from trading
and therefore halting their growth. The power of the states is still important as it can hold
its own laws but as more states become part of unions the power of each individual state
decreases meaning we are moving towards a post-westphalian state.
Why is it important?
It is important as it changes the priority in who is the important people and law makers. The
people elected into the EU now can arguably have more of an influence on a person than a
politician in their own country.
