Answer all questions in this section.

0 1 Figure 1 shows part of an arrangement that is used to measure the specific charge of
the electron. The path of an electron beam is observed on a screen.

Figure 1

The horizontal plates have a vertical separation of 5.0 cm.
A potential difference of 147 V is applied across the plates, creating a uniform
electric field between them.

A value for the speed of the electrons is required. To measure this value, a uniform
magnetic field is now applied between the plates and is adjusted until the electron
beam is undeflected. This magnetic field is directed out of the page.
The speed of the electrons is 9.6 × 106 m s−1.

0 1 . 1 Calculate the magnetic flux density when the electron beam is undeflected.
[2 marks]

magnetic flux density = T

The deflection of the electrons between the plates is 2.0 cm.

Show, using only the data in Question 01, that the vertical acceleration of each
electron in the beam is about 5 × 1014 m s−2.

length of horizontal plates = 8.5 cm
[2 marks]

0 1 . 3 Determine, using only the data in Question 01, the specific charge of the electron.
[2 marks]

specific charge of the electron = C kg−1
