Aquinas’ 5 ways first 3

Motion- unmoved mover
 Everything is in both a state of actuality and potential
 No infinite regress of movers
 Therefore must’ve been a first mover

Causation- uncaused cause
 Everything has a cause
 Infinite regress of cause is impossible
 Must’ve
 been a first cause

Contingency- necessary being
Contingent being- dependent on something else, begins and ceases to
exist.
Necessary being- cannot not exist, eternal

 If everything was contingent at some time nothing would exist.
 Therefore must be a necessary being that causes all contingent
beings.


Leibniz- principle of sufficient reason

 Why is there something instead of nothing?
 Every contingent fact has a sufficient reason
 The universe is contingent therefore requires an explanation
 Only a necessary being can explain it
