Cosmological argument
A posteriori
Universe exists and that requires an explanation= God
Aquinas’ 5 ways first 3
Motion- unmoved mover
Everything is in both a state of actuality and potential
No infinite regress of movers
Therefore must’ve been a first mover
Causation- uncaused cause
Everything has a cause
Infinite regress of cause is impossible
Must’ve
been a first cause
Contingency- necessary being
Contingent being- dependent on something else, begins and ceases to
exist.
Necessary being- cannot not exist, eternal
If everything was contingent at some time nothing would exist.
Therefore must be a necessary being that causes all contingent
beings.
Leibniz- principle of sufficient reason
Why is there something instead of nothing?
Every contingent fact has a sufficient reason
The universe is contingent therefore requires an explanation
Only a necessary being can explain it
Kalam argument
Defended by Craig
Actual infinite cannot exist
Past cannot be actually infinite
Therefore universe began
Whatever begins has a cause
Therefore universe has a cause
Actual infinite- a completed infinite set (impossible)
Potential infinite- a process that could continue forever
Craig argues that
Universe formed by successive addition
