, WHAT IS THE STORY
ABOUT:
• The story is about Diekie van der Spuy. Diekie joins a new school in a small town. He is the new kid of the black and at first
everybody is interested in him. But the novelty wears off. He befriends the narrator of the story, Deon, and sists next to him
in all their classes.
• Diekie tells crazy stories about his biological father – saying he is overseas and a bodybuilder traveling to New York. He
brags and says his father is sending him a gift – a very fancy watch. The children suspects Diekie is telling lies and Theresa
urges Deon to confront Diekie about the lies.
• One afternoon at 15:00, Deon decides to go to Diekie’s house while Diekie is at choir practise and see for himself what is
the truth. Diekie’s house is far away by die station and even getting there is difficult on his bicycle. When Deon arrives, he
is greeted by Diekie’s stepfather who is wearing old and dirty clothes and smells of alkcholol. He tells Deon that Diekie’s
biological father is dead and this new truth upsets Deon as he then realises that Diekie was indeed telling lies.
• Deon is very upset and when he sees his friend, Diekie, he confronts him and asks him why he told lies and what is the real
truth. Diekie doesn’t say anything and out of frustration, Deon starts hitting Diekie. Deon beats Diekie to a pulp and
Diekie does not say aword. Deon is very disappointed in his friend.
• Diekie does not come to school for 2 days and Deon expects Diekie’s parents to phone his parents any moment, but they
don’t. They have too many problems of their own. Diekie comes back to school and everyone is asking where he got the
black eye.
• Deon decides to help his friend and says that he bas been to Diekie’s house and it is lovely. He says he has seen the watch
and it even has games on it. He decided to protect his friend’s reputation and keep the secrets.
