Sentinel City is an interactive virtual city that allows students to move throughout via a
bus ride. Students are able to interact with many different people in various neighborhoods
throughout the simulated city.
B. Needs Assessment
Demographics
The entire population of Sentinel City totals 663,862 people, and these people live
between four neighborhoods: Nightingale Square, Acer Tech Center, Casper Park District, and
Industrial Heights. When breaking up the population of Sentinel City into age groups, we see
that 7.4% of the population is under 5 years old, 21.7% is under 18 years old, and 10.5% is over
65 years old. Half of the population is female and 81.6% consider themselves white. Other races

represented are Black/African American at 10.4%, Asian at 3.7%, American Indian and Alaska
Native at 2%, and 3.1% are two or more races. 31.5% of people in Sentinel City identify as
Hispanic or Latino. The median income for each household is $49,091 with 18.9% of households
falling below the poverty level (Healthcare Learning Innovations, 2018).
The demographics within each of the four neighborhoods vary. Industrial Heights has a
population of 38,855 and a median household income of $24,672. 37.5% of people under age 65
do not have any health insurance coverage. The population of Nightingale Square is 103,974
with a median household income of $269,550. Only 0.7% of people under 65 years old in this
neighborhood lack health insurance. The Acer Tech Center neighborhood has a population of
168,390 with a median household income of $166,300. Only 1.5% of people under age 65 lack
health insurance. Casper Park District has a population of 352,643 with a median household
income of $80,134. 22.7% of people in this district under age 65 do not have health insurance
(Healthcare Learning Innovations, 2018).
In Industrial Heights, the primary ethnicity is Hispanic or Latino at 46.8% of the
population and black or African American is the secondary ethnicity at 13.1%. The primary
ethnicity in the other three districts is white with a secondary ethnicity of Hispanic or Latino
(Healthcare Learning Innovations, 2018).
Neighborhood Safety Assessment
While riding the bus and walking through the neighborhoods, I observed many safety
hazards. Starting in Nightingale Square, I noticed some graffiti on the older buildings. There
were several police cars and fire engines, and I could hear sirens almost the entire time I was in
that neighborhood. Trash was thrown around across the street from Joe’s Grocery store and stray
cats roamed amongst it. I did not notice any safety hazards in Acer Tech, which is the business
center of Sentinel City. Casper Park contained many abandoned, boarded up buildings that were
