- Bestaan uit bepaalde atomen (zie tabel van Mendeljev)  voornamelijk koolstof
- Meestal polymeren
- Biochemische reacties in ons lichaam zijn gebonden aan: lichaamstemperatuur
(37°C) + waterig milieu

Trace-elementen: Komen in zeer kleine hoeveelheden voor, maar zijn essentieel voor
het lichaam

Atomen in biomoleculen: Bepaalde atomen zijn specifiek nodig voor specifieke
biomoleculen

Laboratoriumomgeving: Sommige reacties kunnen alleen plaatsvinden onder hoge
druk of speciale omstandigheden om moleculen te maken

In het lichaam: Slechts bepaalde reacties zijn mogelijk door fysiologische condities
