Founded in 1920. It's the most prominent national professional voice for radiologic
technologists. It represents individual practitioners, educators, managers and
administrators, and students in radiography, radiation therapy, and nuclear medicine,
as well as the many specialties within each modality. Goals are to advance the
professions of radiologic technology and imaging specialties, to maintain high
standards of education, to enhance the quality of patient care, and to further the
welfare and socioeconomics of radiologic technologists. It has more than 130,000
members.

It is a radiation-regulating agency for the control of equipment and technologists. A
state board of health may require licensure of radiographers or may leave the
regulation of users of ionizing radiation to the voluntary jurisdiction of the individual
health care facility. They conduct inspections and levy fines for noncompliance with
regulations.
