Metered-Dose Inhaler Medication

Pre-procedure: Assess for need
Position: Seated or High Fowler's
Preparation: Shake canister
Administration:
-Patient may self administer
-Have patient exhale completely
-Place inhaler into mouth & form a seal
-Press down on canister to discharge one puff
-Instruct pt. to inhale slowly and hold breath for 10sec
-If 2nd puff is needed, wait 1 minute
-Have patient rinse & spit if steroid is used

Assess: swelling, redness, drainage, or complain of pain
Administration
-Check pH of secretion (normal pH=7.1)
-Hold irrigation solution 1" from eye
-Separate lids with thumb and index finger
-Direct solution over eye from inner canthus to outer canthus
-Recheck pH and continue rinsing as needed
