Cognitive Approach AO3 Evaluations
Limitations
P - A limitation of the cognitive approach is that its theories can be seen
as reductionist.
E - The use of computer analogies to explain internal mental processes
ignores other factors such as the role of human emotion and motivation on
cognitive processes.
E - For example, Johnson and Scott found that anxiety has a negative
effect on the accuracy of recall.
L - This shows that there are other biological factors, and that it is an
incomplete study of the mental processes.
P - Another limitation of the cognitive approach it does not represent the
true application to everyday life.
E - This therefore suggests that cognitive psychology is too conceptual
and / or theoretical in some instances.
E - For example, experimental studies of mental processes are often
carried out by the use of tests of memory (i.e. a word list), which may not
represent what your memory would intake in everyday experience.
L - Therefore, the research on cognitive processes may lack conclusions
of studies that are out of context.
Strengths
P - A strength of the cognitive approach is that it has always used highly
controlled and precise methods of study.
