They show how the users can expect to interface with and get a benefit from the system through use of cases. It can also show external systems places that are needed to provide the functionality as it pertains to object-oriented-programming. Class diagrams show the building blocks (classes) that are needed to build the software/system. Class diagrams give a visual of the needed classes.
