An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
ü Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
ü You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
ü This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
ü Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why
or why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
ü You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
ü Write 300 - 500 words.
New Cutting Edge Advanced – An Evaluation
The study materials found in unit 1 of Cutting Edge Advanced Student Book contains
well-structured articles, activities and reports. The subjects of study is appropriate due
to its relativity across the globe, and all cultures, when it comes to the reality of
globalization, urbanization and English as the lingua franca.
The construction of this unit is rational. The reading text is detailed enough to suit
acivities for skimming, scanning and even freer practice. The activities presented to
students are interesting, diverse and range in their difficulty, becoming more difficult as
students make their way through the tasks. Such tasks involve and encourage the
development of extensive grammar (continuous verb forms), performing difficult
learning activities, and writing a report containing elements of the four language skills;
reading, writing, listening and speaking. These skills are compelled through
comprehensive tasks from one activity to another. Also making use of the importance
of practice, recycling and revision, including different revision exercises to check a
student’s understanding of the topic “global living”. No teacher book with lesson
procedures, answers and extra teaching resources (teacher’s guide) is found in this
unit.
Activities in this unit involve individual work, pair work, and group work through
interesting exercises and articles, using the four language skills in a balanced manner.
Most activities cover reading and listening and a few involve the writing, and speaking
and pronunciation skills to encourage extensive and fluent expression of self in group
discussions.
