QUESTION 1

1.1 According to Leland et al. (2013) the concept of reading for
pleasure at both home and school contributes to a student’s academic
success and critical thinking skills. In a paragraph of 150 words, discuss
how this approach contrasts with viewing reading solely as a skill to be
learned and practiced.

Reading for pleasure is different from seeing reading only as a skill that
must be practiced. When children read for enjoyment, they choose books
that interest them, and this makes them feel more relaxed and curious.
They read because they want to, not because they are forced. This helps
them think more deeply about stories and ideas, which builds critical
thinking. Leland et al. (2013) explain that reading for pleasure at home and
school supports real understanding, not just learning words or sounding
out sentences. In contrast, when reading is treated only as a skill, it often
becomes a routine task with drills and exercises. Children may focus on
getting answers right instead of making meaning. This can limit creativity
and reduce their interest in reading. Reading for pleasure, therefore,
encourages a stronger love for learning and helps students grow
academically (Leland et al., 2013).
