Identifying / Family Information
5 minutes 22 seconds
Tell me about your family and support system.
My immediate family is very supportive. They try to keep me
entertained and come visit me. My extended family lives
everywhere in the country, so I don't see much of them. I do get
visits from my ex-wife and stepkids. They make it a mission to
come see me several times a year. So that's nice also.
5 minutes 27 seconds
Tell me about your current living arrangement and level of
assistance needed.
It's actually really good. My parents do a good job taking care of all
of my needs, from medicine to care. I do have a nurse four nights a
week, which also helps a lot so my parents can get some sleep.
5 minutes 29 seconds
Tell me more about what types of things you need help with.
Mainly, it's difficult for me to type, so I have help doing that. And
sometimes it's hard to get the suction in my hand quickly so that I
can suction. And basically all my needs like getting pretty, or

getting dressed, or cleaned up or bathed. All of that takes
assistance.
Areas of Concern
6 minutes 51 seconds
What do you hope to accomplish during your evaluation today?
I am here to have my speech and swallow evaluated.
6 minutes 58 seconds
Tell me about any issues you are having with speaking and
swallowing.
I had a brain stem stroke. My swallow, when it works kind of, but
probably half or three-quarters of the material goes to the wrong
way, down into my airway. And it can either cause me to choke or
have pneumonia. My speech, the therapy I need is pretty obvious. I
kind of sound well, labored speech. And some of the sounds I
make don't come out like they should.
7 minutes 37 seconds
How long has your swallowing been an issue?
Well, we're going on ten years at the end of August that I haven't
been able to swallow properly. Like I said earlier, I think that I can
swallow some, it just goes the wrong way. And so to avoid getting
pneumonia, I basically don't do too much eating and drinking. It's
just safer that way.
7 minutes 42 seconds
What other difficulties have you experienced since your stroke?
My problem swallowing, problems with speech, problems with
vision, problems with motor control. Luckily, somehow I managed
to keep my brain.
