Procedure:
Part I. Reaction of Zinc with Iodine

Procedure Observations, Measurements, & Calculations

1. Weigh approximately 0.50 g of zinc metal
on the top loading scale and place it in a test Mass of test tube:_________
tube. Record the mass of zinc used.

2. Weigh approximately 0.50 g of iodine on Mass of Zn(s):_________
the top loading scale and place it in the same
test tube with the zinc metal. Smaller pieces
of iodine are preferred because they will Mass of I2(s):_________
dissolve in the water faster. Record the mass
of the iodine used.

3. Measure approximately 1.3 mL of deionized Total mass of reactants used: __________
water and place it in the test tube with the
zinc and iodine. Then, add 3 drops of 0.1 M
acetic acid to the tube and mix it well. Do
not add the acetic acid to the test tube
before the water because toxic iodine gas
may evolve. As the iodine begins to
dissolve, the solution will turn brown.

4. Swirl or gently shake the contents of the test
tube until the solution becomes clear and
colorless. This will take approximately 3 to
5 min.

Record all observations and include photos
of your reaction test tube before and after
swirling.

5. Calculate the theoretical yield of ZnI2 based
on your measured reactants.

Theoretical Yield of ZnI2(s):_________
