SHOULD HAVE + V3

Meaning: A regret or a mistake — something right that wasn’t done

Positive Examples:

 I should have studied more for the exam. (I didn’t study and now I regret it.)
 She should have called her mom. (It was the right thing to do, but she didn’t.)

Negative Examples:

 You shouldn’t have lied to your friend. (Lying was wrong — regret or criticism.)
 He shouldn’t have driven so fast. (It was dangerous — a mistake.)

COULD HAVE + V3

Meaning: A missed opportunity — it was possible but didn’t happen

Positive Examples:

 We could have won if we tried harder. (It was possible to win, but we didn’t.)
 She could have gone to Harvard. (She had the chance, but didn’t go.)

Negative Examples:

 He couldn’t have known about the storm. (It wasn’t possible for him to know.)
 They couldn’t have finished without help. (They needed help — it wasn’t possible alone.)

WOULD HAVE + V3

Meaning: An imaginary result in the past — usually with “if”

Positive Examples:

 I would have helped if you had asked. (But you didn’t ask, so I didn’t help.)
 They would have come if they’d known. (They didn’t know, so they didn’t come.)

Negative Examples:

 She wouldn’t have left if you’d arrived on time. (She left because you were late.)
 We wouldn’t have believed it without proof. (We needed proof to believe it.)
