Global Warming
Evidence for Global Warming
• Temperature increases by 0.6 - 0.7oC in the last 100 years. 11 of the 12
warmest years since people started keeping climate records . This has
occurred since 1995.
• 23% loss in arctics ice caps- the smallest it has been.
• Glaciers are melting
- Mount Kilimanjaro- 85% has melted since 1912
- Mount Kenya
- Himalayan Mountains - peaks
- Andes- peaks 20%
• Coral reefs are dying because the ocean temperature is rising- acidity of
the ocean
• Flooding of coastal areas
• Marked up in levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere since before
the industrial revolution
E ects of Global Warming in Africa
• Health malnutrition
• Poverty
• Sea levels rising- ooding
• Higher wildlife extinction rates
• Climate change
• Loss of certain species
• More frequent and severe weather
• Shortage of food/ resources= people moving closer to them
• Rising air temperature= more diseases
• Habitat change
• Water stress
In Africa:
Increase in temperature
• Spread of tropical disease further north and south
Floods
• Wet areas become wetter= increase in rainfall
Results
• Increase in mosquito carried diseases
• Water bourn diseases
• Crops wash away
• Livestock drown
• Infrastructure destroyed = less trade and less aid
